From Stroke Survivor to Community Builder: My Journey to Empower Independence Through City Helpers Inc.
In 2022, my best friend's life changed forever. He suffered a stroke that left me not just physically challenged, but emotionally and socially isolated. Like many stroke survivors, He faced a mountain of new limitations, but one challenge caught me by surprise — how hard it was to get help with everyday chores.
Simple tasks he once did without thinking — cutting the grass, trimming hedges, cleaning the garage, moving heavy boxes — suddenly became impossible. He searched for assistance, but time and again I ran into walls: expensive services, long wait times, or worse, no help at all. He felt helpless in my own home.
Watching that helplessness lit a fire in me.
Instead of accepting this as his new reality, I turned it into a mission. I founded City Helpers Inc., a company built on one simple idea:
There are lots of seniors, homeowners or stroke survivors who should not feel alone or stuck when it comes to maintaining their home and independence.
City Helpers connects seniors and homeowners with local, vetted workers who are looking to earn extra income by doing small tasks.
We have since expanded this to include all businesses who need extra help with their short term projects. Whether it’s yard work, warehouse work, clearing out a garage, or painting a room, we match people in need with people who are ready to help.
But this is more than a business — it's a movement. It’s about helping people in need, helping businesses thrive, giving a chance to people in the community an opportunity to earn extra money on their time, restoring dignity, independence, and community connection to those who have been left behind by traditional service models.
It's about giving people hope and creating work opportunities at the same time.
I believe this story — of turning hardship into purpose.
